| Swartz Students Celebrate Cinco de Mayo |

Fourth grade students at Swartz Upper Elementary recently celebrated Cinco de Mayo in Miss Williamson's Social Studies classes. Students brought piñatas, maracas, pesos, & sombreros to share with their homeroom class. Each class also celebrated with a special fiesta. Students were served chips, salsa, queso dip, Mexican cornbread, enchiladas, tamales, tacos, Mexican wedding cookies, crawfish enchilada dip, rice, beans, and cinnamon twists. The students were taught about the Battle of Puebla and other important Mexican-American events. A great time was had by all.

| OPHS Students Earn Microsoft Certifications |
 |
During the 2008 spring semester, several juniors and seniors at Ouachita Parish High School participated in a dual enrollment program earning technical college credit through Louisiana Technical College Delta Ouachita. Upon completion of the class, Microsoft Office Specialist certification exams were taken. Introduction to Business Computer Applications students Britney Bobo, Alex Harmon, Robert Jenkins, and Alexis Tracy, passed the Word 2003 exam. Julie Butler, a Business Computer Applications student, passed the Word 2003 Expert exam. These students have gained important industry-based certification credentials and earned technical college credits which will enhance their value in the marketplace. The Microsoft Office Specialist program is recognized as the standard for demonstrating desktop skills with Office applications. Congratulations to these students and their teacher, Connie Carraway!

| Federal Programs Director Receives State Award |
 |
Sam Douglas, Federal Programs Director for Ouachita Parish was recently recognized for outstanding accomplishments in education. During the 2008 NAFEPA (National Association of Federal Education Program Administrators) Annual Conference in Washington, D.C., Douglas received the State Leadership Award. NAFEPA presents the award to current members who have assumed significant roles in the support and promotion of activities and goals of the state affiliate organization. Douglas is known far and wide for his abounding knowledge and leadership abilities. He never wastes an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of others. We sincerely congratulate him for this award as well as his almost 44 years of outstanding accomplishments in the field of education.

| SHS Teacher Receives Favorite Teacher Award |
 |
Congratulations to Randy Carr of Sterlington High School who has been selected to represent Ouachita Parish School System in the No Child Left Behind-My Favorite Teacher Awards Program. This award is given by the Louisiana Federation of Republican Women. The LFRW Award is an annual award whose nomination is sent to the National Federation of Republican Women’s No Child Left Behind-My Favorite Teacher competition. The NFRW Award was established in 2001 to honor outstanding teachers across America, who have made a difference in the lives of their students. Congratulations!!

| GHMS Librarian Named Officer in State Association |

Good Hope Middle School Librarian, Elizabeth Dumas, was recently named 2nd Vice President for the Louisiana Association of School Librarians. We are very proud of Elizabeth and all of the hard work she exerts in making GHMS library and media information program one of the best in the state. We know she will represent us well! Congratulations!!

| Swayze Principal Represents Parish |

Marquita Bowman, Principal of Swayze Elementary School, was recently chosen to join the State Superintendent’s Principals Advisory Group. The purpose of the newly developed group is to provide the "voice" of the principal in state level discussions and decision-making around policy and best practices. The group will assist Superintendent Paul Pastorek in achieving the Department's vision of a world-class education system and its mission to increase student achievement, to eliminate the achievement gap, and to prepare students to be effective citizens in a global market. Bowman was chosen for being principal of a state-recognized high poverty/high performing school. Congratulations!

| RJHS Student will represent in Myrtle Beach |
 |
Diarra Bryant, 7th grade student at Richwood Junior High School won first place in the state in Public Speaking at the Junior Beta Club State Convention in Lafayette. After he was announced the winner, Diarra had the opportunity to deliver his winning speech before 11,000 people who were in attendance. He will compete at the National Junior Beta Club Convention in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, June 14-17. Good luck to Diarra!
Other students who competed at the state level were Xiniqua Cloman who won 4th place in the Spelling competition, and Taeler Coleman competed in Poetry. Congratulations to all!!

| Woodlawn Fourth Graders Travel to Houston |
 |
The fourth graders of Woodlawn Elementary traveled to Houston, Texas May 2-3. On Friday, they visited the Museum of Natural Science where students were able to view exhibits and experience the butterfly center. Friday night, students watched the Houston Astros play the Milwaukee Brewers at Minute Maid Park. As part of a special promotion that night, students received Astros jerseys and were treated to a fireworks show at the end of the game. On Saturday, the fourth graders traveled to Johnson Space Center, where they learned about NASA and the space program. This visit included a tram ride around the space center and a visit to mission control. The students ended their trip at Kemah Boardwalk, on Galveston Bay. Thanks to Mrs. Stephanie Cobb, our fourth grade math teacher, who made this trip possible!

| OPHS SINGERS RATE SUPERIOR! |

Under the direction of Kathy Cordova, the Ouachita Parish High School Choir recently competed at the Louisiana Music Educators Association State Competition held in Lake Charles, LA. The group received superior ratings in both performance and sightreading. They are scheduled to perform the "Requiem" at Carnegie Hall in New York City on Memorial Day with the renowned composer and conductor, John Rutter. Congratulations!

A retirement tea honoring West Ouachita High School teachers Wanda Davis and Carolyn Sistrunk will be held on Sunday, May 18, 2008, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the school's Commons Area. Friends, family, and former students are invited to attend.
