WMHS AFJROTC recognized as one of the top programs in the nation

WMHS AFJROTC recognized as one of the top programs in the nation

The West Monroe High School Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corp (AFJROTC), LA-061 Cadet Squadron, recently had its Unit Evaluation and scored among the highest corps in the nation.

This evaluation included an Open Ranks Inspection, Drill and Color Guard performance, and a Cadet led briefing on the status of the program. WMHS AFJROTC exemplified excellence, earning a score of 100 percent, “Exceeds Standards” rating during its Headquarters AFJROTC Unit Assessment conducted on April 2, placing West Monroe AFJROTC in the top 3-5 percent of all AFJROTC programs nationwide.

This rigorous assessment evaluates multiple aspects of the unit, including leadership, curriculum, operations, community service, and cadet engagement.

This is the third consecutive year the LA-061 Cadets have achieved this highest distinction — an extraordinary accomplishment that displays the program’s commitment to the Air Force Core Values of “Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence in All We Do.”

According to the Headquarters Air Force JROTC inspector, the West Monroe AFJROTC unit stood out for its impeccable adherence to standards, superior cadet leadership and ownership, active cadet involvement, community service, and complete commitment to the JROTC mission of “Developing Citizens of Character”.

The Corp has amassed over 4,100 hours of community service, nearly 40 hours per cadet, while performing 68 community service events.  In addition to community service, the cadets participated in 14 different leadership development teams and took four Curriculum-In-Action field trips.

Under the direction of Lt Col (Ret) Mark S. Hart and TSgt (Ret) Gregory Gilliland, the program has developed a culture deeply rooted in excellence, accountability, and service. Their mentorship has impacted the cadets to become better leaders and citizens throughout the school and community.

As part of the evaluation, several cadets were individually recognized for their outstanding performance.  Cadets Sophia Flores and Hayden McDonald were awarded the Outstanding Performer Certificate, recognizing exemplary performance and dedication to AFJROTC.  Five cadets earned over 100 hours of community service and were praised by the AFJROTC Inspector for their efforts; those recognized were Jackson Crocker, Sophia Flores, Marley Gulledge, Hayden McDonald, and Annabelle Smith."
