Ouachita Parish Schools to remain closed through the week (Jan. 26-Jan. 30)

Ouachita Parish Schools to remain closed through the week (Jan. 26-Jan. 30)

Ouachita Parish Superintendent Todd Guice announced on Tuesday that Ouachita Parish Schools and its campuses will remain closed for the rest of the week (Jan. 26-30), following the impact from Winter Storm Fern over the weekend.

This decision came after assessing five major factors – electricity, water, conditions of roads and highways, damage to facilities, and the ability of our employees to get to work.

According to Public Service Commissioner Foster Campbell, Ouachita Parish received the hardest hit from the winter storm, and communities across the district are still recovering from impacts to the power grid, water systems, roads, and personal property.

District and school leaders are still assessing damages to school facilities and infrastructures with some unable to get to certain schools because of impairments to the roads.

The District Leadership team is already aware of damages to some schools. All damages will be addressed prior to students and employees returning to work. Updates will be provided prior to campuses re-opening.

The Ouachita Parish School System will continue to be in constant contact with Entergy, DOTD, and local law enforcement to closely monitor conditions and to assess safety throughout the parish.

We appreciate the efforts and bravery of the Entergy workers who are working diligently to restore power as quickly – and safely – as possible. A special thanks also to the selfless volunteers who have answered the call where needed as crises arose over the past few days.

Superintendent Guice and all district and school leaders want to reiterate that the safety of our students, staff, and families is always our top priority. We truly appreciate your patience, cooperation, and understanding as recovery efforts continue from one of the most destructive winter storms to ever hit Ouachita Parish.

Updates will be provided through the official Ouachita Parish Schools website (OPSB.net) and its social media channels.

Please continue to stay safe.
