Ouachita Parish Schools Hosts Second Annual Principal Institute

The Ouachita Parish School System recently welcomed school administrators from across the district for its Second Annual Principal Institute, a two-day professional learning event designed to strengthen leadership capacity, align district priorities, and support continuous improvement in teaching and learning.

The Principal Institute serves as an important opportunity for district leaders to communicate goals, expectations, and initiatives while providing principals with meaningful opportunities to collaborate, learn, and prepare for the upcoming school year.

Day One: Building Capacity Through Collaboration and Compliance

The first day of the Institute focused on ensuring that administrators are equipped with the knowledge and resources necessary to effectively support all students. During the morning session, principals revisited procedures, mandates, and best practices related to the identification and support of students who may qualify for specialized services, including Section 504 and pupil appraisal referrals. These discussions reinforced the district's commitment to providing appropriate services and supports while maintaining compliance with state and federal regulations.

The afternoon session shifted to collaboration and strategic planning. Elementary, middle, and high school principals participated in grade-band breakout sessions where they worked alongside their colleagues to discuss goals, share successful practices, and develop plans for the 2026–2027 school year. These conversations provided valuable opportunities for administrators to learn from one another, discuss common challenges, and identify strategies that will positively impact students and staff across the district.

Day Two: Strengthening Instructional Leadership with N.I.E.T.

The second day of the Principal Institute was facilitated by representatives from the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching (N.I.E.T.), a long-standing partner in the district's efforts to improve instructional practices and student achievement.

Recognizing that school leaders play a critical role in advancing teaching and learning, principals selected two of three professional learning sessions based on their individual school needs and leadership goals. Session topics included:

·         Sustaining ILT Impact with Continuous Data-Informed Decisions

·         Learning Walks: Looking Beyond Teachers' Actions to Maximize Impact

·         Using Student Work Analysis in Reflective Coaching

These sessions provided administrators and their school leadership team with practical strategies for strengthening Instructional Leadership Teams (ILTs), using data to drive decision-making, conducting impactful learning walks, and engaging teachers in meaningful reflective coaching conversations centered on student learning outcomes.

Throughout the day, principals explored ways to leverage the N.I.E.T. framework to build teacher capacity, improve instructional practices, and increase student achievement. The collaborative discussions and real-world applications reinforced the district's commitment to creating a culture of continuous improvement in every school.

As the Ouachita Parish School System prepares for the 2026–2027 school year, the Principal Institute serves as a reminder that strong schools begin with strong leadership.
