SCHOOL BOARD MEETING & PUBLIC HEARINGS

DATE: September 9, 2008

4:30 p.m. Budget Hearing
5:00 p.m. Millage Rate Hearing
6:00 p.m. Board Meeting

Ouachita Parish School Board will conduct its regularly scheduled meeting. All public is invited to attend. The location will be Ouachita Parish School Board Room - 100 Bry Street, Monroe. For more information: 318-388-2711.

SCHOOLS REMAIN CLOSED UNTIL MONDAY 9-8

Ouachita Parish schools and offices will remain closed Thursday and Friday, September 4 and 5. Due to flooding and power outages, officials have decided to proceed with caution and ask students and staff to stay home until safety is restored. In addition, storms have backed up such services as regular food deliveries to schools, and many teachers and staff are left without power and/or open roads to travel to school.

Classes will resume at regular time on Monday, September 8.

RHS Art Teacher Receives National Recognition
OPSB News Richwood High School art teacher Christi D. Jones has been named 2008 Angel in Adoption for the state of Louisiana. Christi was nominated for the award by the Adoptions Department at the Office of Community Services. After graduating from Louisiana Tech, Christi was hired by the Center of Children and Families to work as an advocate supervisor for CASA (Court appointed Special Advocates.) She advocated for abused and neglected children.

After being in the CASA program for a while, Christi and one of her volunteers saw a way to help some of the foster children find forever homes. After much research, they organized and established the Heart Gallery of Northeast Louisiana. Heart Gallery is a nationwide organization that professionally photographs all of the foster children available for adoption. Northeast Louisiana did not have a Heart Gallery for the foster children of this area. The mobile display of photographs was taken to different venues throughout our area getting the faces of children needing a permanent home in front of the public. Eleven children have been adopted or are in the process of being adopted as a result of the Heart Gallery of Northeast LA. You can find the Northeast LA Heart Gallery information on the nation wide website: heartgalleryofamerica.org.

The Angel in Adoption Award is orchestrated by the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute. After the Adoptions Dept. nominated Christi and her volunteer, their nomination went to the state level. Rodney Alexander chose them to represent Louisiana in Washington. In September, they will travel to Washington D.C. to attend the Awards Ceremony on the Capitol grounds. That same evening, they will attend a GALA event where all of the Angels in Adoption will be recognized. You can find more information at Angelsinadoption.org.

Christi is the daughter of Danny and Olyce Bennett. She has told many that she feels her experience at CASA has better prepared her for teaching. She is still actively involved with CASA as a volunteer. Congratulations Christi!!
