Louisiana law requires every parent or person living in the
state, having charge of any child, ages seven to fifteen, to send such child to public or
private school and shall assure the attendance of such child in regularly assigned classes
during regular school hours established by the school board.
Whoever violates these provisions shall be fined not more than fifteen dollars each day
the violation continues.
All Ouachita Parish Schools are required to notify parents, verbally or in writing,
anytime they suspect a students attendance is becoming a problem. It is then the
responsibility of the parent to work with the school to correct the problem. In the event
that the problem continues, the school will notify our office. We will then attempt to
visit the parent in person to find a solution. If parents continue to not cooperate with
us, the case is then turned over to the District Attorneys office.
