Ouachita Students Concerned About Animal Rights (OSCAAR) recently was organized at Ouachita Parish High School. Members are students interested in making a difference in animal welfare, learning about animal issues, educating others about animal issues, and fundraising on behalf of animals. OSCAAR's spring semester goals include collecting bleach, kitty litter, dog shampoo, and old towels and blankets for local animal shelters, participating in Earth Day, providing pet care bookmarks and brochures to elementary and junior high students, and sponsoring lunch-hour videos on the problems of pet overpopulation, the cruelty of organized dog fights, and the connections between animal abuse and domestic violence. Several OSCAAR members already are volunteering at the Ouachita Parish Animal Shelter, the Humane Adoption Center of Monroe, and the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo.
