OPSB.net - OPSB Recognizes Students of the Year

Ouachita Parish School System recognized thirty-three 5th, 8th, and 12th grade students in a luncheon celebration themed A Salute to the United States. A record crowd joined in the celebration adorned in their favorite Red, White, & Blues! During the awards ceremony, three Ouachita Parish students were selected to represent the district in regional and hopefully state competitions: Nick Sanders, George Welch Elementary; Blaine Armstrong, Calhoun Middle School; and Konstance Brown, West Monroe High School. Recognitions were also presented for best portfolios.

The Students of the Year Awards Program is designed to recognize outstanding elementary, middle/junior high, and high school students. This program, patterned after the Teachers of the Year Awards Program, is an excellent opportunity to recognize from each school system those students who have demonstrated excellent academic achievement, leadership ability, and citizenship. The program is sponsored by the Louisiana State Superintendent through the State Department of Education and the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education.

The luncheon was an elegant and successful event coordinated by Elois Crumpton and Lynn Parsons with help from the Instructional Team. Ouachita Parish High School Choir led by Kathy Cordova presented a tribute to soldiers past and present, and their families. Richwood High School ROTC led by Sgt. Bell presented our colors.

Regional Student of the Year competition is scheduled for later in the month. Students from thirteen surrounding parishes will vie for top honors. Those chosen will continue on to be interviewed in Baton Rouge for the title of 2008 Louisiana Student of the Year. Good luck to our three representatives!
