Three Library Media Specialists from Ouachita Parish presented a session at the Louisiana Library Association Conference held in Baton Rouge on March 6-8. Elizabeth Dumas (Good Hope Middle), Annie Miers (Riser Middle), and Jan McGee (West Monroe High) presented a session titled “To Genre or Not to Genre.” They encouraged librarians to think outside the box as they explained why and how they rearranged their fiction collections by literary genre. The students of these schools have really enjoyed the new arrangement of books by topic and have discovered that their favorite fiction books are much easier to locate.
These Ouachita Parish Library Media Specialists were also recognized by conference attendees for their research and presentations around the state in September of 2006 titled “Why Johnny WON’T Read” which offered suggestions for encouraging reluctant males to read. This group was instrumental in the creation of the document Library-Technology Connections to the LA Comprehensive Curriculum which has been shared with library media specialists across the state and used as a model in other states.
