Lauren Ogles, an eighth grade student at Westridge Middle School, has been selected as a local honoree for the Prudential Spirit of the Community Award. The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards honor young people in middle level and high school grades for outstanding volunteer service to their communities. Created in 1995 by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), the awards constitute the United States' largest youth recognition program based solely on volunteering.
The Ouachita Parish 4-H Clubs selected Lauren as a local honoree for her work in 4-H community service programs. She developed a community service project called “For the Love of Reading Challenge.” Local 4-H Clubs around the parish donated used books and magazines that were then donated to the Ronald McDonald House, the YWCA Battered Women’s Shelter, North Monroe Hospital, St Francis Medical Center, and Glenwood Medical Center. Over 4,000 books and magazines were collected. The 4-H Clubs at George Welch Elementary and Highland Elementary collected the most books and magazines and will be treated to ice cream parties courtesy of Blue Bell Ice Cream. Bill Bobo and Quality Printing also donated labels that were placed on the books and magazines to note that the Ouachita Parish 4-H Clubs donated them.
