WMHS Theatre Presents Remember the Holocaust
Posted on Wednesday, March 22 @ 15:54:59 CST by aline

OPSB News The West Monroe High School Theatre Department under the direction of Shirley Allen Fields is inspired to present a collage of plays and works from the Holocaust. Most of the schools in Ouachita Parish have read some literature or studied the history from this tragic period of history. However, there are many who do not know the full scope of the Holocaust.

Click "read more" below for full story...

For the first time in history, the United Nations declared January 27, 2006 as world Holocaust Remembrance Day. The department hopes to mount the plays Number the Stars, I Never Saw Another Butterfly (the true story of Raja who was one of 100 out of 15,000 who survived the concentration camp Terezin), and The Diary of Anne Frank. Other works such as Night and Witnesses from Neuremberg are to be presented as readers' theatre.

Students from Kiroli Elementary School, Good Hope Middle School and West Ridge Middle School will also be cast in the productions. Invitations and packets are to be sent to all schools in the Ouachita Parish to inform teachers and principals of how they may attend and receive excellent study guides and links for incorporating these important works into their subjects. The department's students are actively involved in research, dialect study, dramaturgy, script analysis, interviews of local Jewish figures and professors at ULM who might assist in the accurate and authentic portrayal. Much of the information obtained from the Florida Educational System on Teaching the Holocaust is incorporated.
Teachers and principals are asked to contact Shirley Fields by email or fax @ 388-4594 for more information and specific dates for schools and students to attend the productions.

Continue to check for stories on these aspects to be pictured in the Remembrance: The Arts: Oppression and Creation, Persecuted Groups: Children, Woman, The Gypsies, The Handicapped and The Black Holocaust. Teachers please consider this as a life-changing educational workshop for your students. Thank you for your support. Cast lists are to be released to the media so you may congratulate your students on this worthwhile project.
