The Sterlington High School Character Counts committee has been quite busy this month. The committee consists of 18 students and 4 teachers. Each of these members is responsible for 10 students volunteers that work with them to do community and school projects. This means that there is a minimum of 180 volunteers in our school. The projects chosen for this month are for the Veterans Home on Hwy 165. The volunteers have filled 180 gift bags with items such as Kleenex, note pads, pencils, pens, lotion, chap stick, tooth brushed, and a few goodies. These bags will be delivered to the veterans the week before Thanksgiving. The committee has also found out that the items most desired by the Veterans are fishing poles and bait so they can fish in the Bayou that is located behind the home. Three dozen fully equipped fishing poles have been donated by Armstrong Cricket Farm in West Monroe. The farm has also volunteered to show some of the boys on the committee how to make worm beds in ice chests. The poles and the worm beds will be taken to the Veterans Home next week. Arrangements are being made for some members to go down and fish with some of the veterans.
At this time the committee is busy making plans for projects during December. Volunteers are in the process of stuffing and addressing letters asking for donations for St. Jude’s Hospital. When finished, they will have stuffed and addressed 1000 envelops. This project is called "Write Out Cancer". Students will also be stuffing 200 stockings for the Salvation Army Toy Drive. These students have been very busy for the past few weeks. Sterlington High School is very busy for the past few weeks. Sterlington High School is very proud of the "Good Character" that students are showing by helping others.
